Law of Attraction

Hop on this helicopter ASAP. Or better yet ladies, hop on this diamond cinderella carriage as soon as you can. Have you heard about this yet? The law of attraction, my friends. The law of attraction. This shit, is cool. This shit is something that is overlooked, underrated, and totally underestimated. Wake up. Toughen up. This world is not nice. Reality will not play nice with you. You must take control of your own destiny. It is absolutely possible. I’m getting kind of intense right now about this law of attraction thing because this shit is real. Believe it.

I’m going to walk through this topic in a way that is constructive for me in hopes that it is just as constructive for you. This concept is building off my last post about designing your life with vision boards. This concept is very similar, but is much more powerful if you actually put your intentions into actions. Let’s deep dive this and get into the details of the law of attraction:

Law of Attraction – the belief that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, people can bring positive or negative experiences into their life

Put even more simply, the law of attraction is the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on. This idea is physics, philosophical, and psychological. Being that I have an engineering background, my nerd side drifts towards whether the science is indeed factual. The law of attraction for a long time has been a topic of debate with arguments like: science can’t prove it, it’s not scientifically real, it’s pseudoscience (no scientific evidence). However, slowly as science has progressed, there have been small success studies piecing together some evidence that this theory is scientifically true.

I’m not going to get nitty gritty into the scientific side, I don’t want to bore you with that. But if you want me to get factually detailed, reach out in the comments and let me know! I’ve also linked a few articles if you want to browse on your own. Some people resonate better with the law of attraction when the theory is proven factual and scientifically true. Some of us however might not really need the facts, we just need to understand the power of the mental concept behind this. What I really want to talk about is how you can use the concept, how you can apply it and how to start using the law of attraction to your advantage.

The law of attraction is based on the concept that like attracts like. Things in our universe – objects, people, thoughts, feelings – tend to migrate towards one another if there is something that attracts the other to it. It’s a universal principle in quantum physics. What makes it hard to believe or understand, is that it seems kind of magical. How the hell can I start thinking about a mansion on the oceanside and then it becoming where I live in real life? This is where we have to dig deep with our relationship with our self and our relationship with the universe. Do you believe you can influence your thoughts and actions? Or do you think that the universe makes things happen to you?

The universal truth is, your thoughts do have an effect on your surroundings and events that happen around you. If you are able to come in tune with these relationships, it is then that you can begin to attract things into your life. If you are able to understand the content that you want to attract into your life and you understand the energy you need to expend to bring that content into your life, then we’re talkin’. There are lots of celebrities that have talked about how they feel they’ve successfully used the law of attraction and why they believe in it.

Make a choice of what you want, who you want to be and how you’re going to do it. The universe will get out of your way – Will Smith

  1. Make the Decision – I can’t help but think of Captain Jack Sparrow and his compass. Fun fact, I’m a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan. Remember how he has to decide what he wants first, and then the compass will point him in the right direction? Remember what happened when he couldn’t decide what he wanted? Poor Jack didn’t know what direction to go and his compass was then broken. This is exactly like the law of attraction – you must know what you want before you know what way to go. As long as you have a clear mind and know exactly what you want, finding the direction of where to put your energy towards becomes a lot easier.
  2. Believe in Yourself – If you don’t wholeheartedly believe you deserve what you are seeking, the universe will know and will make it much harder to get what you want. Whatever deep-rooted doubts or fears you have, you must address those with love and forgiveness. Otherwise, those internal negative feelings will compete with the energy you should be releasing to what you desire. The love you have for yourself is very important and will help combat the obstacles that come your way.
  3. Practice Awareness – Throughout your journey, you will probably be approached with the opportunity to try new things. In order to get something you’ve never had you must be willing to try things you’ve never done. Instead of being afraid or having doubt in yourself trying something new, you can be thankful that you’ve been given the opportunity to do something you’ve never done and try your best. This is called gratitude. This mindful practice has been known to help adjust your mindset to make you more open to possibilities. Do not let this concept of how your thoughts attract your surroundings make you feel guilty or ashamed of events that have already happened. If your fears have already manifested negative events in your life, do not feel responsible for your failure. Work on your new awareness with your new thoughts and use gratitude to help accept what has already happened. Focus on where you are now, who you are now, and work with your current and most relevant self.
  4. Take Action – Nope. You can’t just think of things and they’ll happen. You must take action. Go out and start doing what you most desire to do. Take baby steps. Jack Sparrow had to go find his first crew in the bar to be able to sail his ship! He didn’t know a single crew member except for Mr. Gibbs, but he knew he needed a crew to sail to his next destination. Get out of your comfort zone, believe in yourself, and start taking action. Want to fit into a size 2 instead of a size 4? Go buy those jeans in a size 2. Act like you are going to achieve your intention and you are already well on your way to putting that positive energy into what you want. Taking action shouts loud and clear to the universe that you are ready for change.
  5. Persistence & Patience – There is no specific timeline for how long it will take you to manifest what you want in your life. If you feel stuck or impatient, you can revisit these steps along the way. Are you starting to doubt yourself? Return to Step 2. Do you not feel as connected with your direction? Return to Step 1. Are you losing your belief in this concept? Return to Step 3. Above all, the persistence and consistency of energy that you are able to maintain directed to what you want most, will inevitably yield you your result.

You can create your reality. With your energy you put forth, your intention you have within you, and the actions you perform – you can attract the things you want most. But let me be brutally honest, you better be ready to work. You better be ready to put the hours in. You must be focused, committed and dedicated to the one who’s running the show – YOU. You don’t have a coach telling you what to do, you won’t have anyone else making sure you work on your vision. This is purely and indefinitely your own endeavor. And I have absolute confidence in you that you can do it!!!

You Can Design Your Life: Here’s How

The art of design can be applied in many aspects of our lives. We commonly hear about interior design or fashion design, but I’m going to talk about life design. There is something about thinking of an idea in your mind and then making it come to life. When we can imagine something and then create it, that makes us feel pretty darn good. The same way that you might design an outfit or your room, it all starts with a vision. Some people are familiar with the term, vision boarding. I’ve always been a fan of vision boards even before I knew that is what people called them. I just liked cutting images and phrases out of magazines in high school and making collages because I loved looking at all the beautiful outfits, nice purses, and inspiring words of women I looked up to. Nowadays making vision boards is the cool thing to do. There are a ton of different ways, but here’s some favorites of mine for you to try:

Old-Fashioned Cork Board

It doesn’t get better than having those ideas physically right in your hand. Get some magazines, print out some quotes, use a photo delivery service like FreePrints or Shutterfly for pretty cheap and good quality photos to make your vision collage even more boujee. Get creative one weekend and become so excited about designing your life or your future that this “project” becomes totally fun – it should be! It can be a work in progress too. Just getting the board up on your wall and a few quotes or pictures that you like is the perfect start. You can build upon it as your vision evolves and grows. Build it in a way that it’s your daily reminder of why you are working so hard at what you do. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy either. In college, I used to tear the pages out of magazines of all the fitness and fashion models and tape them on my wall until one day it was totally covered with pictures of these beautiful and in shape women. I loved it and served me every day pushing me to keep my goal in front and remind me why the result is worth the extra work. Here’s some examples of my home made ones, nothing glamourous!:

Pinterest

You know what’s so cool about Pinterest? Pinterest actually calls your collections “boards”. Make your vision “board” in your Pinterest app. It’s digital, but as we are in a digital world, Pinterest makes it really easy to add to your vision collection on the go. Even while you are surfing the web and find something you totally love that’s fits your vision – you can pin it to Pinterest and add it to your vision board. It’s a different style than like a cork board collage, but it’s still a way to collect images, phrases, and information in one place that you can reference for inspiration or motivation. Check out my vision board on Pinterest for some inspo if you need a kickstart. (Yes, I even call it my “vision” board)

Polyvore

Haven’t heard of this one before? Neither did I, until I met this amazing fashion and stylist blogger, and haven’t been more excited to make vision boards. Polyvore is actually a shopping and fashion app. It has libraries of designer products like shoes, bags, clothing, even furniture and interior decor. But it allows you to save the product images to a “collection” and you can make a collage, Polyvore calls it a “set”, of all the products you save to your collection. What is so cool is that most products you can find as PNGs and essentially you can make sets that look like those magazine collages we know so well from Cosmopolitan or Vogue of pieces of an outfit. Then, counter in the fact that you can upload your own images, you can use their editor as a super awesome tool to make mini vision boards (aka “sets”). It’s totally awesome, I absolutely love it. When I get some inspiration of what I want or what I am envisioning, I collect all the pieces the best I can and throw them into Polyvore. It’s digital, but being able to think of something and then bring it to life using this first step of manifestation, it feels SO good. It also gives you a tool to share your vision with other people! Sometimes it’s hard to explain what you’re envisioning or what your vibe is, and this is an awesome app to combine all of those and end up with a piece of work you can show people. Here’s an example of some of the sets I put together with this new “palm vibe” I have brewing for the spring season, you can also find my profile in-the-making here:

Take control and design your life. If you are not where you want to be, take action and find those physical affirmations of what you want it to be. Find those pictures of fashion that you love and then try them for yourself. Find those pictures of fitness models and workout plans and put them into action. Create collections of information you want to learn and start finding ways to gain that knowledge. I’ve said before how amazing it is that we have so much information at our fingertips, but it all comes down to how we actually use it and how we put it into action. Have fun with this! It feels SO good to have an idea and then create it. Or maybe you don’t have an idea! – start collecting things anyways, see what your collection starts to become, and I’m sure you’ll start to see a trend with your interests.

I’m always looking for new ways to create and bring ideas to life. If you have other ways that you like to manifest with, please comment below and I’ll give them a shot!

Or better yet, share your creations with us! You can tag @becausegirls_ on Instagram with hashtag, #becausegirlsblog and we’ll take a look or give you a shoutout on our page!

Books for the Slay Girls

You might be underestimating the power of a good book. I’ve been looking for some jam-packed, worthwhile quick reads to get some useful information that isn’t easily found just by scanning Instagram and Twitter feeds. Sometimes it’s actually nice to have a tangible page in front of your face that you can touch, feel, markup with a highlighter, and keep by your nightstand for easy access when you need some insight. Reading a book doesn’t mean it has to be a long, boring, drawn-out process. I’ve found a few that I think are worth sharing and worth your time:

The Personal Brand Bible for Ambitious Women by Marielle Legair

  • Girls and women of all ages! Get your hands on this book ASAP. Personal branding is so important in this new age of social media and Marielle does a fabulous job giving the ultimate advice straight-up and to the point. Whether you are looking to become Instagram famous, get that promotion at your company, or land a new job – this is what you need. With checklists at the end of each chapter, it’s easy to perform a quality check of your status and what you need to work on. Watch my VLOG at the end of this post for a fun intro to why you should hop on her bandwagon!

Girl Code by Cara Alwill Leyba

  • Cara Alwill Leyba argues that girls are more powerful together. When we can connect and support one another, then that’s when real magic starts to happen. This book contains more theoretical tactics to motivate and inspire you rather than actual business tips – Cara is a life coach, after all. The stories throughout aim to show examples of when female entrepreneurs combine their powers to make things happen, all sides win in the end. Her feel good attitude and empowering mantras are contagious!

Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office by Lois P. Frankel

  • This book IS for the nice girls! Surprisingly, there are natural biological women instincts that can potentially sabotage our careers without even realizing! Lois does a wonderful job breaking down each “mistake” into simple explanations WITH suggestions of how to fix it. I’d consider myself a nice girl, and some tips in here really hit home for me. With 101 quick tips, it’s easy to read a couple then reflect and put down the book until you’re ready for some more.

Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk

  • Gary V – this guy is the man. If you didn’t read his first book, Crush It!, you might want to start there. I didn’t because who has time for that! But, this is Part 2 and walks through the same principles shared in his first book while giving case studies of people that actually took his advice and made it work. In a way, it makes his advice more legitimate and shows you how these people took what they needed, put it in action, and achieved success. Now you have no excuses.

Settle for More by Megyn Kelly

  • Although you may know Megyn as a NBC News anchor, her story offers impressive insight into her charismatic, courageous, and determined character. Taking the leap from her thriving legal job to follow her passion as a journalist gives a story into how perseverance and tough skin can be built upon through your journey. Her motto “Settle for More” grasps the concept of fighting for what you believe in and tells how she used this to keep up her progression. Reminding us we all can reach beyond our perceived limitations!

Bringing Out The Best in People by Alan Loy McGinnis

  • This is an oldie but goodie. My father was the one who always referred me to this book when overcoming difficult people problems at work. If you are managing a team, growing your network, or looking to how to best serve those around you, this book gives 12 principles you need to embody.  Learn the skills that leaders have used for centuries to motivate their following and how you can gain satisfaction from being able to create an effective system when bringing out the best in people!

I hope you find that one of these books will suit what knowledge you are looking for! There is so much information at our finger tips, sometimes it is hard to sift through all the options and pick one that works for your learning style, your interest, and authors you can connect with. Start your library, or add to it, and begin learning from others. Remember – we are not in this alone! If you have other books that you love that I did not list, please comment below!

Why You Need a Morning Routine

Everyone has a morning. We all wake up after a nights rest about to start a new day. What does your morning routine look like? Do you have one? Why should we have a morning routine? For a lot of successful people, they claim that how they set up their morning can make or break their day. Just how I talked about thought processes and mindset in this previous blog, your morning routine can play a large part in how you make the most of your time. I think for all of us, we all want to have an awesome day – whether that is meeting up with good friends, having successful meetings at work, or just simply being happy with what the new day brings.

Have you ever experienced when something happens to you in the morning and the rest of the day is burdened by what happened? Maybe you spilled coffee on your outfit in the car before work, maybe you checked your phone right as you woke up and a client canceled last minute for an important event, or even just as simple as you forgot your lunch. Whatever has caused you distress in the morning can make an impact on your mood the rest of the day.

If we can start our morning in a way that sets us up for success, then we’re bound to be able to approach those obstacles in a way that won’t drag us down. If we set up our morning routine for success, this is feeding our confidence for the day ahead. Our confidence is a major key to our success. If you start your day wrong, you are bound to have less confidence. We must work to protect our confidence daily because it is key to having a productive day in whatever we are doing.

I’ve collected some habits that others use in their morning routine to set them up for success. Use these habits to help strengthen your confidence and without a doubt it will translate into the effort you are putting forth in what you want to achieve. You probably won’t use all of these, but take what speaks to you, implement into your morning, and see if your confidence, attitude, and outlook on your day improves:

  • Practice Gratitude: Being grateful is a powerful trait to have. It is a tangent of being humble. Gratitude allows you to set aside the ego, be thankful, and be grateful that you get to wake up today to work towards something
  • Put Your Phone on Airplane Mode: The night before, put your phone on airplane mode. We are constantly being bombarded with notifications. Those could be emails, text messages, or social media updates that should wait until you are ready to consume them. If something goes wrong or a post didn’t get as many likes as you wanted it to, your confidence is already taking a hit. You have already lost focus on yourself. If you wait until you’re ready to consume the content, you can already set up your mindset to be ready to take on those obstacles and your confidence for the day won’t be at risk
  • Set Up Your Focus: Wake up and think about what you want to kick ass at today!! What’s your intention for the day? What do you need to focus on to help you succeed? A lot of influencers believe what we focus on we become. What we focus on we can achieve. I can go into a whole other blog about this topic, which I eventually will, but think about where you need to point your focus to help you have a successful day and what will help contribute to your confidence. That could be focusing on the motivation to get to the gym, focusing on what your going to pitch to your boss today for a promotion – choose what you want to put your energy towards for the day that is going to feed your soul.
  • Get Moving: Not only do we need to feed our soul, we need to feed our body. I used to be a morning gym-goer but lately I’ve liked working out after work. Whatever works for you, moving the body is so important. Awhile ago during travel, I had a conversation with a lovely older lady. We were talking about exercise and she said, “Hun, don’t work out for your body but for your mind”. I think it’s good to understand that working out isn’t just to look good, it is a healthy way for your body to release good endorphins which in turn can really help out your confidence and self-esteem. Then of course eating a healthy balanced diet. I’ve started this crazy ACV drink that I sip on while doing my makeup and it’s actually pretty bomb. LOL
  • It’s Not What You Have to Do, but What You Get to Do: Here is a great example of a mindset shift. By thinking in the way where you have to go to work, you might feel brought down or upset with the fact. But thinking in the way where you get to go to work – bitch, you’re getting paid! Go make a difference today at work! No matter how small. Instead of you have to go to the gym, you get to go to the gym. Bitch, you have legs that can move! You can breathe normally! You ought to be thankful that you get to go to the gym and work on yourself. Same goes for anything else more complicated. Make that switch.

Time to rise and grind, baby. Set up your morning routine so that you start your day off with confidence. Set yourself up for success. Put intention into your morning routine and see how much your day improves and how much more you accomplish. Comment below what else you do for your routine that I didn’t cover here! I’d love to know. Let’s all go kick ass and have a successful day.

Podcasts You Should Listen To

If you have not tapped into the knowledge contained in podcasts, I’d absolutely recommend dabbling in a few. Podcasts are essentially talk shows conducted by anyone who decides they want to share information with the world. I’ve taken advantage of road trips, airplane rides, and down days at work to really work through some content on some well known podcasts. If you’re a seasoned podcast listener, I may be preaching to the choir. But if you have not started listening to podcasts and want to, below is a list of podcasts I’ve enjoyed listening to. I’ll try and describe in summary the gist of their content. Some shows you might vibe with better than others. Find who you like to listen to and take the time to consume their intellect, reflect how you could use it to your advantage, and go out and implement.

Podcasts you should listen to

The MFCEO Project – Andy Frisella #100to0

Are you really ready to become the mother fuckin’ CEO? Andy is tough, real, practical, and an inspirational speaker. He’s not afraid to tell you right to your face why you are failing. I vibe well with his shows because I have that “real” sort of outlook on life. Some may be offended or might think he’s too critical – but I love that because life is never going to go easy on you. I enjoy most of his longer shows interviewing other distinguished individuals such as:

  • Insanity, Intensity, and Becoming a Peak Performer with Tim Grover – In case you don’t know who Tim Grover is, he was once legendary basketball player Michael Jordan’s life coach. This episode goes deep into competition, relating sports discipline to business discipline, and the intricate relationship you need to have between the balance of your team and your business.
  • Creativity, Conflict, and the Art of Making Millions with Randall Pich – Randall Pich is CEO of LVFT, a fitness lifestyle apparel brand that is killing it right now. He shares his story of growing up in a ghetto lifestyle and how everything in his life was an obstacle trying to deny him success.
  • Money, God, and Maxing Out with Ed Mylett – I’m usually not the “God” type, but Ed is an inspirational older gentleman that has embraced the changing social media platforms and adapting to how he can use it to his advantage. His multi-million dollar mindset is one of the highest paid influencers Andy has featured on his show.
  • Impact Over Income with Navy Seal J.P. Dinnell – I save this one for last because this has been one of my favorite episodes to listen to across all other podcasts. J.P. has a contagious enthusiasm for following through with what he loved to do – protect his country. This discussion reaches through all concepts of how much mindset comes into play and how Navy Seals are one of the most reputable sectors of the military. Absolutely inspiring.

The GaryVee Audio Experience – Gary Vaynerchuk

This podcast will relate to those of you more in the small business or start up atmosphere. Most of his episodes relate to building your empire, legacy, or whatever it is you are pursuing. He is another influencer that is extremely well known for his “cold hard truth” mentality and will challenge you to go beyond your limitations.

  • A Keynote: Freedom Fast Lane Live – Number 70 of his episode list, his keynotes are his public speaking opportunities with certain events around the globe. The topic for this conference was capitalism. He goes into why he invested into Twitter, discusses self-awareness, how to scale things that you are good at, and why it’s so important to invest into your own strengths.
  • Airplane Project Tracks 1-12 – This is an interesting compilation of 5-15 minute discussions, or rants, were Gary gets a little deeper with you on more real life concepts that are applicable to everyone. He isn’t just about business in this series, but more intuitive with your outlook on your life.

Style Your Mind – Cara Alwill Leyba

For all of my slay girls out there, Cara hosts a podcast built for just us. She is bubbly, lovely, and really gets to the point. I do have to say that sometimes I’m not ready for her amount of girly, but I know there are lots of girls out there that would like her style. Most of her episodes are under 20 minutes and deliver a quick pep talk on a certain hot topic she’s into. Cara worked for MTV until she realized she wanted to be a life coach and published her own book, Girl Code. I own it, read it, and loved it. If maybe you don’t like her episodes, I highly recommend the book.

YouTube channels you should watch

  • Leaders Create Leaders by Gerard Adams has completely transformed over the years into an impressive collection of inspirational stories. His guests are reputable business owners making MOVES in the business world. The way he’s developed his video content – the interviews are totally captivating.
  • Absolute Motivation has a massive library of influential people.
  • If you’re like me and love the #bossbabe movement, the CEO of BossBabe, Natalie Ellis, has created a new YouTube channel just recently that shares all her social media tips and tricks.
  • I will also put one more on here that is a littllllle out there – no joke, I found this chick while searching about moving to Maui and she has this energy is that pretty cool. If you want to get down with your hippie self, Larissa Joy shares a very real energy through the camera that some people will vibe with. It’s not for everyone, but like I said in the very beginning – you will find you vibe better with some influencers more than others.

OK, well that ends my list! These podcasts and YouTube channels have TONS of episodes and content for you to absorb. Don’t just listen to listen. Sit down with a notebook, write down what stands out to you, and try and replicate those actions or beliefs in your day-to-day life! See if this way of learning works for you. I know I’ve really enjoyed listening to these influencers speak. I hope that you can raise your intellect to where you feel accomplished with what you’ve done for the day. Sometimes we get down in the routine and feel kind of stagnant in the reality of 9 to 5’s. My advice is whenever you start feeling that way, throw on one of these episodes and I bet that you’re mood will change for the better.

Find the voice that can be a mentor for you and help you through what you’re working on. Besides the ones I listed, there are so many more to explore. Easy access to knowledge has not been more prevalent in any generation prior to ours. It’s time to start taking advantage of the privileges we have for the betterment of our future.

Mindset is Everything

With it being the start of a new year, I’ve started researching more thoroughly what it takes to “hustle”. I know, you can laugh. To some this might seem like a taboo subject, but stay with me and see if you really know what you think you know. I’ll state the disclaimer that I’m not speaking to everyone. Your “hustle” or your “grind” is probably completely different than mine, but I want to connect with you on the next level. The level where it doesn’t matter what it is you’re working towards, but how you are mentally approaching the challenges. This has become a key concept for me to grasp, understand, or even control. I’m extremely guilty of viewing my own personal obstacles as debilitating events in my life, becoming negative and feeling beaten by them. That is the very feeling I want to bash into the ground to show you how we CAN control our circumstances. It starts with the mindset.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but every day we wake up, our mind is thinking a way that we’ve accustomed it to. It is “who we are”, right?  That is because over time we have habitually created our own thought processes, whether good or bad. Thought processes can be influenced by many, many external things. Things like, who you hang out with, your job at the time, your boss, your parents, who you’re living with, what your room looks like, what type of car you drive, food you eat, alcohol you drink, or the music you listen to – I could go on and on. Those are only a few of our external surroundings that affect how we think about stuff. What I’m finding after listening to countless podcast episodes, reading books, talking to more experienced professionals – there is a much higher wavelength of thinking. If used to your advantage, it can be of great use to how you achieve the wants and desires you dream of in life. Learn to take control of that, your mindset, and suddenly good things start to happen.

I don’t mean this as a fool proof life hack of like, “hey, start thinking differently and your life will magically get better!”

No. Nothing works that way.

What works?

Practice.

What comes with practice?

Forming habits.

Forming the familiarity with a new workout move or new software system at work, or a new mindset – with practice it can become easier and feel more natural. We must practice the mental workout. A workout of our thoughts, energies, feelings, and emotions – all of that. Changing the mindset from one state of thinking to the next takes practice. The more you work on it, the better it can get. This also takes the self-awareness concept to a whole new level. To change the way that you are viewing an obstacle as a threat versus an opportunity, becomes something you can control. A burden versus a good deed. An annoying customer versus a person in need. An embarrassing moment versus a chance for growth. These are sorts of situations when exercising the ability to alter our mindset, can we learn and understand how valuable this skill is to the advancement of our self.

I won’t say I’m the case study to prove this, but if you start paying attention to what these successful people are saying, this is a common trend among all of them. It’s because I feel we underestimate the power our mind has on the outcome of our actions. If we lose our self-awareness, or start to move through the motions on auto-pilot, eventually our actions lose intention. What we choose to do could be doing nothing to help our future self. Even worse, we could lose sight so much of what we are working towards that we fall behind and are hindering ourselves by not being aware of our perspective on our day-to-day actions.

Mindset is everything. By understanding this, you can start to work on two things at once: self-awareness and your mindset. I say both, because I think these two are very much dependent on each other. If you are not self-aware, then you cannot begin to analyze your train of thought, decision-making, and other pillars that make up your mindset. It’s a win-win if you choose to practice working on those because both are very difficult mental workouts. Becoming self-aware can be uncomfortable. You might have to confess to yourself and accept that you are making actions and thinking a certain way that is hindering your potential. You might come to realize your friends are really dragging you down, or your job, or your relationship. It can be a hard workout. But that’s the first step to making a change is becoming AWARE what needs to change.

Strengthening your self-awareness can help the workout of altering your mindset become easier. Throughout working on getting to know better what needs to change, then you know how to alter your mindset to start making those changes. Say you realize your job is really dragging you down or not enough pay, maybe there’s no room for growth in your position – now you are aware of this and you choose to look into other jobs available with better pay, or talk to your manager about your concerns with your job – RATHER than, complaining every day that you don’t make enough money or work for 3 more years in a role that plateaus your career when you could have been learning something new and advancing roles in another job maybe simply by asking your manager what growth opportunities there are for you. But, you had to make the decision, the mindset change, to realize that yes – you are ready to make a change in your daily habits, in your mindset, to get you a better paying job.

Let’s work through one more example. It’s the new year, there’s always a popular resolution about losing weight or gaining muscle. Working out has been the best metaphor I can relate to when thinking about a mindset change. Say your goal is to get six-pack abs. Sexy right? The end result will be totally worth all the work you have to put in to get those six-pack abs, right? YES. Ok, so are you ready for your 3 month makeover? Are you ready to fit gym into your schedule at least 4 days a week? Are you ready to ditch the take-out and cook for yourself at home? The lifestyle changes required for six-pack abs at minimum require 1hr gym sessions at least 4 days a week, clean-eating, and consistent effort to that 3 month long gym schedule. It’s a TOTAL lifestyle change. But that constant MENTAL effort to get to the gym, work through those painful workout sessions, fight the mind who says it’s so easy just to go get Taco Bell on my way home from work, but you have to say no. It’s a work in progress and consistent MENTAL workout you must practice to beat the temptations that will steer you away from your six-pack ab goal.

If you want six-packs abs, you WILL practice the mental workout and literally complete the physical workout. If you want more money in that bank account, you WILL practice the mental workout to strengthen your mindset to make day-to-day decisions that will help it grow. If you don’t want it that bad, don’t be surprised 3 months from now when you don’t have six pack abs. If you don’t want a lifestyle change that bad, don’t be surprised next year if your still broke AF.

I can’t resonate with enough the comparison of working on your body is so similar to working on your mind. You want to see change? YOU have to be the change. YOU have to put in the effort. YOU have to make the personal decision that you are going to learn what you need to do in order to exceed the status quo. You got to care enough about yourself and about your future to acknowledge that the time spent today, this week, this month can be spent working on improving your self so that in time, you will start to see results for the better.

To wrap this up and connect back to the beginning – what it takes to “hustle” is not some salesperson slogan to making racks that day on a big sale. It’s underestimated in its meaning by how much work it actually takes to embody the sense of “hustling” for yourself. To hustle is to have the courage, the confidence, and self belief to put your mind to something and work through the obstacles and push through the challenges until you find the opportunity you’ve been looking for. To consistently work on yourself, improve, learn, fail and try again. You got to have the mindset to know this is the journey you are embarking on, keeping the eye on the prize, knowing you’ll have resistance along the way, believing in yourself wholeheartedly that you deserve the fucking best for yourself and you’ll do everything you can to ensure that you push your limits beyond any boundary you think is there. There are no boundaries. You CAN control your circumstances. You CAN change. You just got to want it.

A Peek into Arcosanti

There has been more conversation lately about sustainable living. Among ideas of sustainable energy and being environmentally friendly, there is a lifestyle change that we all need to consider to make this happen. Climate change is right in front our face. Whether it is human caused or the course of an Earth cycle, in my opinion it is hard to ignore. Less than usual rain causing humungous wild fires and destruction, increasingly powerful tropical storms and hurricanes unlike anything we’ve seen, and more animal species threatened for extinction than we’ve ever recorded in history due to ecosystems degrading their ability to support life. The top of the food chain is humans – that’s the undeniable fact. In case it’s been awhile since you’ve been in a science class, if the bottom of the food chain is in trouble and diminishing, the top of the food chain might not feel the effect just yet, but it soon will. Either the top of the food chain dies off too, or has to adapt to another lifestyle in order to counteract that it’s current lifestyle is no longer sustainable. This appears to be the state of the Earth – right now.

Arcosanti Vaults Meeting Room Entrance

The incredible thing that we’ve underrated, is that WE have the power to make a difference. Humans are the most capable species on this Earth and we are abusing the privilege of living on a self-sustaining planet. We are exploiting our resources, polluting what is left of them, and ignoring the health and stability of the very system that allows us to have the lifestyle we have. It is incredible to me when it appears leaders, governments, and people of influence in this world are not putting more focus into sustaining the place that we live. Let alone that when the conversation starts talking about sustainability, environmentalism, or communal social groups, that those leaders carry an uninterested undertone. Those are the topics that should be the headlines of our news – the state of the very planet that is letting all of us live at the level we’re at.

Arcosanti Amphitheater: Soleri’s Room

There was one man who decided to do something about it and turn his idea for a solution into something real – Arcosanti. It is a micro-city built by Architect, Paolo Soleri, to test his ideas of restructuring the urban sprawl of cities. This resonated with me as I have been continuously thinking of how to rescue our oceans. The idea came to me various times that the issue is not necessarily top-down – governments laws and restrictions or industrial negative influences – but that it is primarily bottom-up. The individual population has a huge influence in consumer habits, waste production, and contribution to the need for more space, more resources, more of everything to sustain. We may think that growth is enabling us or that bigger is better, when really we are on the path to inhibiting ourselves. Wasted time, resources, and creating more and more waste:

The problem I am confronting is the present design of cities only a few stories high, stretching outward in unwieldy sprawl for miles. As a result, they literally transform the earth, turn farms into parking lots, wasting enormous amounts of time and energy transporting people, goods, & services over their expanses. My solution is urban implosion rather than explosion. –Paolo Soleri, 1977

I went and took a visit for myself. There was something that I observed instantly. It’s something that I feared in that moment, I knew would be so difficult to overcome. It would be one of the most difficult ideas to influence. It may be the very hindrance that contributes to the leaders of the world uninterested undertone. It’s that this lifestyle – although resourceful, communal, and simplistic – is not glamorous. It is not Lamborghini’s and designer handbags. It is not Starbucks and pumpkin spice lattes. It is not a desired lifestyle for many. It almost hurt me a little after seeing this lifestyle, that although this is one way that a community has tried to counter the destruction of the Earth by becoming more resourceful and mindful of the way they use their energy, food and mind – I wouldn’t want to live that way. Thus, because I have the opinion of myself that I am not overly needy of a glam lifestyle, it may have been a little shocking to me that I didn’t think I could live in that society. If I couldn’t, then how the hell am I going to try and convince others to do so?

Community Dining Hall

First of all, this is only one example of a community trying sustainable living. Yes, the architecture is interesting, the message is positive, and the people are absolutely the sweetest and most genuine – but I find it hard for a lot of people in this world to accept the truths behind living sustainably. Smaller living quarters, no exuberant materials, no 5-star restaurants, no shopping malls or massive gyms. The lifestyle is drastically different than what the norm has become, and the norm has unfortunately become a standard from a non-sustainable model.

Arcosanti Living Room

This is when I have to have hope that the people can harness empathy for the Earth and it’s inhabitants – including ourselves. Like I said earlier, this is a bottom-up project. This is going to require us to consider our lifestyle, our use of resources, and our effect to this planet. I have to hope that selfishness will not be the trait that destroys us. Sustainability, environmentalism, and community are not topics to be ignored. They should actually be the forefront of our efforts, they should be admirable, and they are not something to be ashamed of.

Arcosanti Vaults

Even if your daily efforts are to refuse the plastic straw at a restaurant, take your reusable bags to the grocery store, turn off the water while brushing your teeth, or carpool around your city – there are small, individual actions we can take to move towards a global solution. The first step to making a change is awareness – something I hope I’ve shared in this post.

How Are You?

Good morning, good evening, or whatever time of day it is – I thank you for clicking on this link. Read the whole thing if you like. I hope you do, but if not, that’s ok. Out of a burst of inspiration I’ve decided to write this blog post a little differently. I’m going to flow with what comes to mind and if this works out, this will be published and you’ll be reading the flow right now. There’s a lot of content out there, so let me try to make this time spent on my blog worth your time – because it’s precious.

We’re approaching the new year, usually a time for personal reflection and goal-setting. Don’t get scared away just yet, I don’t want to preach about goal-setting or how to decipher how this past year transpired. I want to get real with the girls out there, or boys too, and ask the question of: how ARE you? Right now, in this week, this day, this moment. How are you? Like personally, like how is your mind-set? How have you reacted to today’s events, how are you in your space? It sounds like such a simple question, I know, but take a second to think about it. I promise I’m going somewhere with this.

For example, I’ll ask myself. Amanda, how are you? Today, I am trying to find the best way to solve a people problem at work. I am working to learn how other people can work well together. I am trying to bust a 10 year negative culture in the workplace with only 2 years of experience. Why? Because I am hopeful that I can turn my company culture around. How am I? I am optimistic, I am hopeful, I am thirsty for change, for improvement, for discovery. How I am today is the combination of this past years events. So really, if you can ask yourself and be honest with yourself how you are, TODAY, that might be the only question you need to ask – you’ll probably get the most relevant answer.

Because our time is so precious, I think that’s why we need more attention to the now, to the in the moment, to the what is coming up. What has happened in the past is already done. It’s gone. It’s all in your head, literally. It’s our time now to look around the corner, over the edge, between the lines. Today and tomorrow and the next day are really what need our attention. We need to be more thoughtful of how we are spending our time. We need to put more intention into what we spend our time on. If we’re more thoughtful and care about what we are putting our effort towards, which takes time, then we’re bound to have a better end result.

So ladies, if there is not a feeling in your gut that you want to succeed at something, that’s cool. You do you boo. But I have this gut wrenching feeling to make something of this time that we have. This sacred, precious time. It can be overwhelming, sad, hard, confusing, even discouraging – but that’s why we need to choose HOW to approach it, react to it, risk it, play with it, or love it. It’s up to us. Cheers to the girls who have spent their time helping BecauseGirls along the way – in our photo shoots, in our videos, in our crazy clothes – we love you. I want to keep up the positivity, the growth, and the inspiration from all the girls who have passed our way and who are to come. This was the insight into #SlayTribe, something that is only just beginning.

Thanks for reading. If you have a little extra time, answer the question in the comments: How are you? I hope you thoughtfully hop into your next moment with intention, with optimism, inspiration, and confidence. We got this. #slaytribe

Black Friday 2017: Best Amazon Deals

How does it sound to get your Christmas shopping done early?! Take advantage of Black Friday deals and relax for ALL of December instead of just your holiday. The best Black Friday deals can be hard to find with every store throwing coupon ads at your face. You can thank us over fine wine and hot turkey because you don’t have to carb-load for the big day – we’ve done all the research for you! Browse the top finds for 2017 Amazon Black Friday deals and save some money this holiday season. Better yet, all your shopping can done be online. You don’t even have to worry about stepping foot into a store! Oh, and Amazon offers gift wrapping – this might be your easiest holiday season yet!

Let’s get these deals out of the way first. You’ll see in all the other Black Friday articles already that Amazon is really pushing their smart home products. TBH, I didn’t know what they were! You don’t either? Don’t worry I got you covered. If you DO know about Amazon’s tech, maybe your decision to gift some just got a little easier. What I hope you do know is Apple’s Siri function. Amazon pretty much copied Apple and created their own interactive character: Alexa. Just like Siri, you ask Alexa basic questions or say commands and the device performs the request without you having to press any buttons. Most of the time it works. I’m sure if you’ve experienced Siri before, you know what I mean. Amazon claims that Alexa, who “lives” within the Echo product line, learns over time your common questions or commands and will begin to better respond to your voice and how you say things. Pretty cool right? There are 5 different Echo products that all house Alexa (going from cheapest to most expensive): Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Spot, and Echo Show. Click here to find their comparison chart how each model out does the other, about half way down the page. Their biggest deal thus far is to start you off easy with the Echo Dot at approximately a 40% price break – that’s pretty good! You can get to know Alexa, tell her what music to play, tell her to order you a pizza, an Uber, or even turn your lights off for you if you have the nifty light bulbs. Echo Dot is also available in a whole bunch of colors to match any personality.

Aside from Amazon offering killer deals on their own products, Black Friday is usually known for being tech-savy with lots of deals on electronics like TVs and computers. However, let’s not be boring and check out some of their photography deals. Yes, real, hand-held photographs are back! For the creative people in your life, this is the coolest vintage camera turned not-so vintage at about 15% off. Meet the Fujifilm Instax Minis. The cute camera has quite a few features like auto-exposure so your pics aren’t too bright or too dark, LED flash, a macro adaptor for close-ups, 5 different camera colors to choose from, and let’s not forget the most important one: a selfie mirror. Yes, you can still take selfies with this thang! Let’s do a throwback and sh shh shake it, shake it like a polaroid picture! (Cue in OutKast)

OK boys, here’s where you can pay attention for a hot minute. Have no idea what to get your mom? Or even any female you know for that matter – here is the best holiday on a budget gift that they are sure to love. These essential oil diffusers are everywhere! Why? They are easy to maintain, super pretty, calming, and can make any room smell like any scent they want! You’ll have to accompany this diffuser with some essential oils to choose from, but they only use a few drops for every use so the little bottles last forever! Give the gift of serenity and you can’t go wrong, especially at discounts up to 40% off. There are a whole bunch of different designs at about the same price tag, so browse Amazons related products to find the perfect one for mom – anyone who needs a chill pill!

Who likes gifts that are for fun? This one is fun AND delicious. For the chocolate-lovers and most importantly, brownie edge-lovers, someone out there loved brownie edges so much that they made a pan that makes all your brownies have edges! It’s non-stick, includes a nylon spatula and brownie recipes for approximately 10% off. Add some candy-canes and these brownies can be considered Christmas cookies – check that off your holiday to-do list!

Just when you thought it was your cheat day, we’re here to remind you it can’t last forever! Amazon plans to give big discounts on New Balance shoes, up to 60% discounts. Don’t scroll just yet – we know it’s not Nike, but have you tried New Balance before? They’re on the come up! From personal experience, I’ve had a pair of New Balance shoe for over a year and I still love them. Here I displayed a pink model (#becausegirls) but there are a TON of New Balance shoes for girls and guys. They do have a sizing guide using length of your foot in inches so it should be easy to pick the size that fits your foot! If they’re not the right size, Amazon should be able to provide free shipping on returns and exchange for a different size. Let’s kick that new year body into shape!

Black Friday on Amazon is supposed to be BIG discounts for 720p, 4K, and smart TVs. Amazon hasn’t released the specific brands that will go on sale (think Samsung or Sony status), but we’re talking up to 60% off  those TVs that choose to offer the discounted listing price on the big day! Keep up to date with Amazon deal alerts through your Amazon app on your phone. Under settings, visit your notifications tab, turn on the “Your Watched and Waitlisted Deals” and get pinged when a product you’ve chosen to watch goes down in price!

If you’re not the TV type, let’s not forget Amazons key to holding all the libraries in the palm of your hand: The Kindle. Maybe you’ve overlooked this item before, but take a second to realize that instead of having to buy a bookstand for all your books and carry those heavy things around, you can have a whole library stored in something as big as a tablet! I’ve personally reconsidered this item because my bookstand is getting full and my luggage is not worth being over weight because I carry books around! Help out the readers in this world and hook them up with the modern way of reading. Amazon has 4 options: Kindle up to 35% off, Kindle Paperwhite up to 25% off, Kindle Voyage, and Kindle Oasis. All feature the no-glare screen, but Kindle Paperwhite is the most popular and Kindle Oasis is waterproof! (P.S. Amazon is going to have sales on Kindle books too! Duh)

What’s better than reading a book, but reading a book with a cup of coffee? I might have to answer with wine but Amazon doesn’t sell wine, YET. I digress – this coffee maker brand will offer up to 20% savings. Now this isn’t just any old coffee maker, this is the way of the future. Why? This coffee maker produces ZERO waste. Aside from your coffee grounds, which are compostable, this offers a method to making coffee without the hassle of coffee filters or those overpriced K-cups. It’s also college dorm size or if your looking to make more space on the kitchen counter. Let’s get caffeinated!

We already talked about vintage photography, how about modern photography? Another killer deal category is mirrorless digital cameras. Photographers are always looking for the next new lens to put their work on the next level, or upgrade their camera too! This bundle offers both. Sony Alpha a6000 mirrorless digital camera is being raved about by photographers as an affordable camera that gives professional quality. On Black Friday you can get the camera and two lenses for up to 40% off the bundle. It really doesn’t get any better than that for a superb camera that will not disappoint.

For our next item, you probably have seen these before: Himalayan Salt Lamps. Granted, there is no scientific proof to the claims that Himalayan salt literally cures what you think it might or provide any literal health benefits, BUT, they can definitely help if you want it to. Think yoga meditation, late night pillow talks, calming bubble baths, a night light – these add a nice earthy touch to whatever soothing aura you want to create. Amazon is offering a 7-11 lb. size at about 50% off! I decided to order one up myself to add to my stone and crystal collection – no judging allowed.

There are so many Amazon deals going on for Black Friday! This list should give you a good starting point and capture most if not all of the Amazon Black Friday deals they highlighted for the big day. Amazon is in the know of most of their items, but there are also third party companies selling on Amazon that could advertise their own deals that aren’t publicized so far ahead. Nevertheless, I put together this variety in hopes that there’s something on here that relates to you or whom you’re trying to gift to.

Black Friday does offer some great opportunities to save money – but let’s not forget why we share gifts to our family, friends, and loved ones. This holiday isn’t shared all across the world, but in America it’s when we make exceptions to slow down life and bring everyone together. It’s a time to be thankful for who we have, what we have, and where we are going. We have gratitude for those around us and in turn want to gift to those whom make a difference in our life. Let gifts be a selfless act. They shouldn’t carry weight on your shoulders or break your bank – have Black Friday help just a little bit!
